Open Letter No. 3

JazzRadioOnline.Org

Dear Jazz Associates,

Following the previous two Open Letters dedicated to the rebirth of the International
Jazz Federation and a great response from the international jazz scene
we are now responding to some comments and will focus on a new important sector
of jazz industry: JAZZ  RADIO  ON  THE  INTERNET.

The vision is needed that would give musicians, record producers and listeners the
impression of a plan promising something beyond tighter domestic borders.  Radio
with million of listeners can be instrumental in solving the expectation.

"There is the European Union, the Internet and Open Market. Yet for the jazz artists,
problems remain much the same as thirty years ago. They need a large AUDIENCE
and direct access to the jazz industry."  writes Gunter Hampel, (Germany) founder of
Birth Records.

"Your worry about where the world headquarters for "jazz" may be important to
"the movement" but i can tell you that those of us who are, night after night, trying to
put on good jazz programming have other worries...where can we get access to good
"product" and how can we report on our work within the movement when we work
(generally as volunteers) in locations that don't have a budget for paying for listing of
our programs...." comes from Jim Compton-Schmidt from Fresno, California.

"... a lot of things are changed...but in truth.. for us musicians and composers of
music Jazz.. nothing is changed... the only way to listen to our voice is to associate.."
Italian musician Ruggero Robin. (ruggero.robin@tin.it)

And, Walter Turkenburg chairman of the European Music Council, the EMC, says
"there is a great need for a strong umbrella organization in jazz based in Europe.
As you noted yourself, things have changed a lot in the last ten years. (...) An
organization that functions as a true forum fo all parties involved in jazz such as the
jazz recording industry, jazz education, jazz musicians, the jazz audience, jazz
venues and festivals, jazz organizations, jazz media, jazz radio, etc, has a valid right
of existence."

Radio and the Internet provide a potential to bring fundamental change. The Internet
has become one of the most exciting mediums of communication and artists are
finding a new ways to express themselves. Digital content can be created and
distributed. Rules for the digital world are now being created on an ad hoc basis since
technology is still evolving. It not only can empower individual users but also can
change the landscape for established players by shaking up the way their music can
be legally distributed. Jazz Radio Web site can stream concerts of relatively little
known artists and make them available online bringing to international audience
artists who get ignored by the big companies. By clicking an icon on the Web site
one can buy a DVD of the concert of those who have something to offer and aren't
getting noticed.

Today more that ever, communication through the Internet lays at the heart of the
challenges we face in our everyday lives. This includes easy access to music
resources and information, and increased mobility. With an integrated platform, we
can make the latest technology work harder to improve the quality for members and
the listening audience. Working every day to involve a new generation of listeners
could be our way of helping to make the dream of a better world for  musicians and
listeners come true.

The JazzRadioOnline.Org can provide a link of communication between radio
stations, musicians and their listeners. Here is a powerful resource that can be
tapped by music industry. Organization can be created and make connections that
are not really there. The might of the Organization and individual stations can be
based on the network, its listeners and individual members. It can be a publicly-
supported cultural institution that promotes jazz, presenting music, news and events
to a worldwide audience. It can function as an audience and career development
resource designed for jazz professionals of all levels and in various segments
of the industry.

You are welcome to participate in the project.
The Mission Statement will be posted in next Open Letter.
